  affiliate tldr    whilst lynn, lo and i aren't exclusives, we've got our own shared canon we've developed for over a year now. the tldr on what this means is that we're borderline exclusive, and i will very rarely follow other deans since we've built such a divergent dynamic together.

  canon divergence    my canon has been completely reimagined. lynn, lo, and i have taken influence from the anime, john's journal and the comics, as well as rewritting canon to include jess becoming a hunter. sam never loses their abilities, they're far stronger than the show could explore. i have personally rewritten the dynamic between lucifer and sam, and will not acknowledge canon post s5 regarding them. we have placed supernatural canon on a sliding timeline. this means there are no definite years for canon events, instead they take place somewhere in the modern day rather than the early 2000s.

DEMONIC ABILITIES azazel possessing mary during the conception, and being fed demon blood as an infant, resulted in sam being a strong half demon and gaining associated abilities. these manifested just before puberty under duress. when at full power, they can access all of the same abilities other special children have such as biokinesis and mind control. a side effect of being part demon compared to the other children is that sam can consume limitless demon blood without dying, as well as access additional abilities such as levitation at times. when using his powers, his eyes appear yellow like azazel's rather than black.

shapeshifting discovered during season one, sam is able to shift their entire physical appearance between a feminine form and a masculine one. they use this often, as needed for comfort with their gender presentation.

visions sam experiences vision of both the future and the past, often coming to her during her dreams. particularly strong visions can happen when awake, but usually cause severe headaches. this power eventually extends into psychometry after a few years and leaves her vulnerable to psychic connections from divine/demonic beings like lucifer.

clairsentience a passive ability, this is one of the first powers he manifested. a form of heightened senses that allows him to sense the presence of the supernatural. this extends to being able to sense demons in the vicinity with practice, although not necessarily who is and isnt a demon.

exorcism whilst this ability is natural to them, thanks to a mixture of azazel's blood and being lucifers vessel, it's not until they start drinking demon blood that it became apparent. ruby teaches them how to exorcise demons with their mind, if he is consuming demon blood regularly or has embraced his demon side, then virtually all demons are vulnerable to him.

immunity sam is completely immune to a variety of demonic powers. due to being part demon, she is also immune to those of other special children. even repressing her demonic side, she is unaffected by mind control powers, the croatoan virus, and forms of photokinesis. while drinking blood, they even become immune to demonic powers like telekinesis, and is only vulnerable to archangels. this also extends to angels, to the point angelic healing cannot fully fix physical wounds and he must do it himself via hemokinesis.

hemokinesis theirprimary ability is the control and manipulation of blood. this manifested as a child in order to save dean on a hunt gone wrong, after which they repress the memories, and the ability only manifests again when he comes back from the dead. he is able to manipulate blood from himself and others, and most often uses it to funnel so much blood into a persons limb that it explodes. this similarly gets stronger when consuming demon blood and can be used to bolster his use of telekinesis on people.

telekinesis usually minor, sam's feats of telekinesis have been stronger when in she or dean are in danger. this power grew considerably the more demon blood she consumed, to the point where she could throw around and restrain top-level demons by using her mind or with the wave of a hand. following freeing lucifer, this returns to occasional bursts of strength, or needs to be supplemented with hemokinesis, until she practises or drinks more blood.

electrokinesis a minor ability to conjure and manipulate electricity, unless he's consuming demon blood. sam can access this as part of being one of the special children, and part demon, although it only begins to appear well into using his powers.

force fields an ability only accessed in dire need or at full power, sam has been able to generate a force field around himself as well as use it to create a shockwave. this was used to protect himself during his fight with jake when azazel set the special children against each other.

smiting + control thanks to training from ruby, sam was able to use this power to kill the firstborn demon lillith. the more powerful the demon, the more concentration it takes, and unless she is fully accepting of her demonic side then it can leave her extremely drained. this is only with the highest level of demons, such as the princes of hell, as she was able to kill lucifers bodyguards with minimal effort. related to this power, he is able to cause both demons and low level angels unbelievable amounts of pain to torture them by harming their incorporeal forms/grace rather than the physical body. at full power, he can smite both humans and demons with a touch. through this power, he can also control certain low level demons and hellhounds, although only as king of hell.

super strength sam has low levels of super strength that manifest with her emotions most often. after coming back, and their demon half being more active, they beat jake to death with their bare hands. when consuming demon blood, this increases their strength at all times and allows them to overpower humans as well as low level demons.

magic proficiency sam has proven to be proficient in the use of magic and is capable of performing complex spells if needed. it is verse dependent who mentors him in this but it's assumed to be a mixture of ruby and rowena macleod. most importantly, he is adept at creating and modifying existing spells to suit his needs.

azazel comes to lawrence with a target in mind. lucifer ordered him to find his true vessel, and azazel knows exactly which bloodline will provide. he came to town in 1993 to get john, and it was a happy coincidence to get john and mary in one.

the deal isn't to enter mary's home in ten years - it's to get possession of her for one week, at a time of his choosing. all he has to promise is that he won't harm anyone in her home.

he calls on her to fulfil this deal in 2002, and it's too late to back out now. john and dean will be safe in their home at least. and of all the horror scenarios she imagined, killing no one but taking john to bed every night was not what she expected.

a few months later, she realises she's pregnant. there's no way to know for sure if this is what azazel wanted and while some part of her is panicked, she refuses to believe her child is damned. mary takes steps instead, ones john won't notice, drinking holy water every day and increasing the salt in her diet.

it's late in the pregnancy that azazel returns. dean is sent to the babysitters as usual, she and john still working, but when she goes home expecting him to have returned there's no one there. she gets the call soon after - azazel's promise was only to never harm anyone in her home. dean had left that refuge.

she goes where he tells her, and pretends he doesn't know about the additions to her diet. he just wants to check in on their little tyke, he says, and deans been perfectly happy in his care for the day. not a mark on him.

this is how he secures the deal to enter her home, so long as he only stays in the nursery. if he's allowed uninterrupted time in there, then he swears no one will be harmed.

sam winchester is part demon by birth, and just to secure the goods after mary's interference, azazel visits sam monthly after birth to feed the infant his blood. her attempts to repress sam's demon half can be cured easy enough.

the list of people who know about sam's parentage is short ; the horsemen, lucifer, lilith, and ruby are aware. the other princes know. heaven knows. the upper ranks of hell. while some demons in the know hint at it, it's not widely accepted until lucifer is freed.

the wraith in 5x11 mocks sam about how he must know, deep down, that it was never just the blood. he's had visions, he knows about mary's deal. it's not until 5x13 that anna reveals the truth about his parentage, which michael then confirms to dean and cas affirms again.

the truth of their parentage is a closely guarded secret in hell, only a select few azazel trusts knowing that sam isn't just the favoured pick of the special children.

this demonic nature is something present but restrained by hunting much of sam's life other than special circumstances. killing silas, saving dean. his problem is and always will be repression, his own and what others force on him.

there's a reason it had to be azazel, other than being the only fanatic prince of hell left. azazel is a fallen angel, of a low ranking before his fall, but lucifer lured him to his side and then corrupting and twisting him into something demonic.

one of the first demons, made from an angel ; it's this corrupted and twisted grace that runs through sam's veins. mother like son, they are both abominations to heaven for this offence.

lucifer doesn't much care for demons. most demons are just ruined human souls, useful to direct but unimportant, but he crafted azazel from the remnants of his fathers creation, creating him anew. this corrupted grace, demonic blood, cannot taint sam. and isn't it only right that his soulmate is made from the very same essence he remade all those millennia ago.

sam starts college at 18, completing a four year course. by the time the pilot comes around, he's already graduated with his bachelors (political science major with a religion minor) and is taking a year out while jess finishes college so they can attend law school together. he has completed multiple internships in legal offices and with judges, and has a few contacts in the legal field he keeps in contact with before the bank heist in s2.

jess is not killed. what sam sees is a trick to force her back into hunting without taking away leverage. this is not revealed until azazel comes to sam in her dream, and jess is sent with jake to the gate. but with jess at stake, sam does go along with the game, after andy dies, to save her, and accesses more of his powers. he stops short of finishing jake off still.

sam and jess meet when she approaches him at brady's prompting, where he's spent the first year or so there struggling with identity and making a lot of friends but getting close to no one. the bloody mary case happens while sams at college, with jess being a target of the ghost before john and dean defeat it.

when dean brings them back, sam comes back... wrong. starting with using their powers to both explode jake's arm and beat him to death. pesky demon resurrection. with jess freed, they spend the next two weeks recovering from all that. telling her the truth. and then she leaves because she's suffered enough.

john was physically abusive to BOTH sam and dean. whilst he loves them, he's a mean drunk full of grief and resentment.

when sam is eight, john makes an attempt to give the boys a semi normal life. but azazel wanted the winchesters to be hunters and so around this time bets are hedged. rumours are spread to hunters that there is something evil in sam winchester, and demons are sent to retrieve sam to groom him into his role. this is what leads to his killing silas, although he doesn't remember doing it.

sam discovers they are genderfluid at stanford, though they've never felt comfortable in their skin. angels don't experience gender as humans do, they change their form as needed and take vessels, and as twisted as he's become - azazel was still an angel, and sam is his child. sam has a physical body, an anchored soul, and that energy needs to manifest.

it manifests as the power to shapeshift, shortly after the winchesters meet max miller. whilst sams gender isn't a conflict between sam and dean since reuniting, it's also clear dean doesn't really understand. when trying to explain, and work out some visual cues to help dean with pronouns....the first switch happens.

while some demons refer to sam with the 'boy king' moniker during the supposed war for the throne with lilith, this isn't accurate to how sam is viewed amongst demons.

for most common demons, sam is just another hunter. but amongst those in the know, especially demons loyal to azazel and still believing in lucifer, they're considered a prince of hell. this is pretty accurate given the power they're capable of, yellow eyes, and being azazels biological child.

azazel spent much of sam's life impressing upon his loyalists that sam would one day rule hell to pave the way for lucifers return, and then they would be the prince to lucifer's king. sam is, in a way, their joint heir.

even in worlds where sam does take the throne of hell like azazel wanted, he would be referred to as the prince rather than the king. even liliths loyalists, during the war, call him this to his frustration. they represent a messiah figure, with upper level demons aware of his destiny having long spread rumour that he would save them by freeing lucifer.

to note, the true vessel is the only one that can break the last seal. it had to be you is not just about sam having been groomed into this, she is literally the only one who can.

but it lingers.things will never be the way they were before. season one girlfriend? (assumed) dead. law school? dropped out. father? missing. dreams? haunted by ominous visions of the future that you cannot escape. gender? coping with it well, actually.

this house on fire.i'm not gonna let you go to hell. season three there is something so very wrong with you, there always has been. your powers are growing, you pretend they're not in the same way you try to pretend time isn't running out. what will you do, what would you become, to save him?

a dark destiny.now i'm asking you, for once, trust me. season four you've done it now, turned yourself into a monster because you couldn't let go, and it's taking all you have to hide it from dean. you know when he finds out then it'll all be over and he'll be done with you too.

cursed with blasphemy.if there is a god, i shall make him cry. the boy king they say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, but you only had the one. save dean. you exhausted every plan, no demon willing to trade with your soul, and then ruby makes a suggestion. if you take the throne from lilith then you take the contracts, and then you can bring dean back. perhaps your intentions can't even be called good then, as selfish as you are. it took a month and a half for ruby to crack you, and now there's blood soaking your hands - it hurts worse, perhaps, that the angels save dean before you can.

bet against the house.we are linked, the same sin binds us. endverse you will never say yes to lucifer. you will die first. those are the promises you make, and all the devil does is laugh. he asks if you would place a wager on it, and one touch later you wake on a rotten porch. lucifer has sent you to the end, safe in the knowledge you are immune to the virus, and first you think this is what happens if you say no. that lucifer is threatening you with an apocalypse should he not get his way. it's only finding dean, one you don't recognise, that you learn you lost the bet.

it's just sex and violence.praying won't do you no good. rockstars you leave for stanford, but this time dean comes with you. it makes things harder and easier, you both work hard for rent money since you cant live in the dorms and you never give up hunting. a series of coincidences leads to the band which leads to being picked up by a label two years later, which leads to the call to say your father is missing two years after that. more info post here.

this beast within you.it can drink until it's sick, but never satisfied. twilight also set in a continuity where twilight vampires are a strain of the vampirism from spn. hunters are very cautious to go up against this strain of vampirism due to the lack of physical weaknesses, though john has it noted in his journal he's managed to kill one or two over the years with some looney tunes traps and fire. details of what takes him into the path of cullens/volturi aren't hammered out yet but likely have something to do with sam's visions and assorted demonic powers. beware, will use his blood powers to fuck you up.
